At Ten More Town Halls in Mid & Northeast Missouri, McCaskill Hears Directly from Nearly 1,000 Missourians »
At a series of ten public town halls, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill answered questions from approximately 1,000 Missourians at forums in mid and northeast Missouri last week. McCaskill held ten town hall forums in California, Tipton, Versailles, Elson, Ashland, Moberly, Macon, Monroe City, Paris, and Mexico. “I’m a better Senator for hearing from Missourians face-to-face, and it’s their powerful voices I carry with me when I return to the Senate to fight on their behalf,” McCaskill said. “Holding town halls is one of the most important parts of my job, and it’s really an honor for me that hundreds of Missourians came out and had their voices heard.” Along the way, McCaskill heard from Missourians of all ages and backgrounds, including a group of retired coal miners who thanked her for her fight to protect their pensions, a fellow cancer survivor, a combat veteran who discussed ways to improve health care, a farmer concerned about agriculture regulations, and a number of Missourians who asked for solutions to help heal partisan divisions. McCaskill, who held eight town halls across the state earlier this year, has hosted in-person public town hall meetings in Missouri throughout her time in the U.S. Senate. Public town halls with Missourians have been a hallmark of McCaskill’s time in the Senate, including her recent town hall tour across the state. During debate over the Affordable Care Act—at a time of heightened demonstrations against the law—McCaskill held a series of highly publicized town halls, including in traditionally conservative areas of Missouri, to hear directly from Missourians about their concerns and respond to criticisms. In 2014, McCaskill logged more than 1,000 miles around the state on her “McCaskill on Main Street” series of public town halls. McCaskill has also toured the state with town halls aimed at military veterans and seniors—and has hosted individual town halls, such as one she hosted last year with then-U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack focused on the opioid epidemic.

McCaskill Meets With Missouri Public School Board Members »
U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill met with public school board members from across Missouri this week to discuss the impact of proposed federal budget cuts on Missouri public schools as well as other issues facing rural school districts. “Public schools are the backbone of so many Missouri communities, and the work these passionate and dedicated school board members do for our kids has such a tremendous impact,” said McCaskill, a graduate of Hickman High School in Columbia, Mo. “As a proud product of public schools, I know just how important a strong public school system is for the future of our children and our state.” McCaskill, a longtime advocate for Missouri students joined a bipartisan effort to restore Secure Rural Schools funding for communities surrounding Mark Twain National Forest—to provide resources to support local schools, transportation, and public safety services. Citing the danger posed to Missouri’s small towns and rural communities, where public school resources are critical, McCaskill joined bipartisan opposition in voting against Betsy DeVos to be Secretary of Education. DeVos is a lifelong advocate for the for-profit school industry, and has spent her career working to privatize public education. In 2015, the advancement of the nation’s largest education overhaul since 2001 included a combination of provisions from McCaskill such as legislation to support military spouses by letting teachers transfer credentials across state lines, and a plan to improve health education with a focus on safe relationships and consent.

McCaskill Speaks With Missouri Girls State »
U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill spoke with this year’s participants of Missouri Girls State this week about the importance of public service and the role of women in government. “I’m always inspired to see so many young women interested and ready to learn more about our government and how to serve their communities,” McCaskill said. “We’ve got to make sure there’s always a seat at the table for these inspiring leaders and help more young women get involved in the political process.” McCaskill spoke by video with the group of 750 participants from across the state about the value of public service, what it means to be a leader, and how young women can play an active role in their local government—even while in high school. Missouri Girls State works with the American Legion to “guide young women to become knowledgeable stewards of freedom, democracy and patriotic citizens.” Established in 1940, Missouri is one of the oldest Girls States in the country.
