McCaskill Wraps Main Street Tour After Logging More Than 1,000 Miles
Senator criss-crossed state hosting public town halls, meeting with local leaders
ST. LOUIS - After logging nearly 1,000 miles across Missouri discussing how to expand job and business opportunities, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill has wrapped up her "McCaskill on Main Street" tour, which brought her to public town halls and meetings with local leaders this week.

"This is part of what makes our democracy great, that I had the chance to meet and hear directly from hundreds of Missourians across the state, and can now bring their ideas and concerns back to the Senate," McCaskill said. "We covered lots of ground, talking about commonsense ways to keep expanding job opportunities and moving our economy in the right direction. It's important to me that I hold myself accountable to folks across our state, and it's nothing short of patriotic for folks to have come and engaged in candid, constructive conversation, even when there was disagreement."
Highlights of McCaskill's tour included:
- Hosting public town halls in cities including Hannibal, Columbia, Rolla, Springfield, Kansas City, and Higginsville-hearing directly from Missourians about their ideas for job-creation, and their questions and concerns on issues including energy security, early childhood education, college affordability, health care, efforts to decriminalize marijuana, cost of living, veterans services, and foreign policy
- Rallying support alongside St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and local veterans for renewal of the Workforce Investment Act-expired legislation with a proven track-record of boosting job opportunities
- Calling for upgrading the region's roads, bridges, and critical infrastructure with Mayor Sandy Lucy of Washington, Mo., where McCaskill was also honored by local veterans for her efforts to combat sexual assault in the military
- Leading a "comeback business" roundtable in Joplin with several local businesses, many of which were severely impacted by the 2011 tornado tragedy, at the Joplin Chamber of Commerce
- Teaming up with fellow Missouri Senator Roy Blunt for a roundtable discussion at the Missouri Air National Guard Base in St. Joseph, to discuss the role of Missouri's military bases in America's national defense and the impact of the recently proposed Pentagon budget cuts-an event participants labeled "historic," in that two Senators of different political parties who both serve on the Armed Services Committee were joining together to advocate for the base
McCaskill has previously worked with Republican colleagues including Senator Rob Portman of Ohio to write the Federal Permitting Improvement Act, to cut through federal red tape and expedite job-creating infrastructure projects. She has joined with a bipartisan group of Senators, including Senator Blunt, to introduce two innovative infrastructure proposals: the Building and Renewing Infrastructure for Development and Growth in Employment (BRIDGE) Act and the Partnership to Build America Act, both of which would provide hundreds of billions of dollars in loans and loan guarantees for infrastructure projects without the use of federal tax dollars.
And McCaskill is a strong supporter of construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline, which she says will be a boost to both American jobs and U.S. energy security.
