WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill met with members of the Fort Leonard Wood Institute, Sustainable Ozarks Partnership, and members of the Fort Leonard Wood community today to discuss support for the base and surrounding community. McCaskill spoke about her ongoing support for Fort Leonard Wood and ways to further strengthen national defense.

“Continuing the long tradition of supporting hardworking Missourians that serve our country is one of my most important duties as a Senator,” said McCaskill, the daughter of a World War II veteran. “I appreciated the opportunity to sit down with leaders of the Fort Leonard Wood community—their hard work empowers local businesses, schools, and research organizations to strengthen our national defense and ensure that Fort Leonard Wood has the best resources available for our soldiers.”

McCaskill is a longtime advocate for Fort Leonard Wood. This week, McCaskill helped pass sweeping defense legislation in the Senate that expands first responder training for state and local first responders at Fort Leonard Wood’s chemical, biological, and radiological weapons training school—of which McCaskill has been a strong supporter.

McCaskill discussed her efforts to support the work of Fort Leonard Wood and the surrounding community last year at the Sustainable Ozarks Partnership annual meeting, including her work to secure $250 million for Fort Leonard Wood’s General Leonard Wood Army Hospital. As part of her Security & Defense Tour across the state in 2016, McCaskill visited Fort Leonard Wood where she met with Soldiers and observed a skills contest described as the “Super Bowl” of Army competitions to recognize outstanding warriors.

The Fort Leonard Wood Institute is a nonprofit research center that primarily focuses on fulfilling the technology and research needs of the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence at Fort Leonard Wood and improving technology in the Fort Leonard Wood region. The institute seeks ways to support the Army's Training Transformation Initiative, which is designed to ensure that Soldiers are fully and adequately trained and equipped.
